Voiceover Script

By our second edit of the film opening, we had decided that we wanted to include a voiceover at the beginning as this is very commonly used at the start of comedy films. It breaks the fourth wall and allows the main character to reveal a part of their comically quirky personality to the audience. Therefore, we thought it would be appropriate for us to include this at the start of our opening. Originally we were not going to have Ebony speak at all in her role as Samantha Stark but due to this change we reviewed our entire potential cast again. I personally found that actress Lily could perform a better South London accent to Ebony so we ask her to record a voice over for her. This would not be an issue as the audience never hear Ebony's voice so they can only assume that Lily's voice is her's. However, if we were going to continue to film the rest of this film, we would have to use Ebony as our voice over to avoid any continuity errors.
Our first thought for the voice over was to have the main character recite a famous quote and then completely ruin it with her own ideology. We decided on a Shakespeare quote from Romeo and Juliet and this was our first draft:
"These violent delights have violent ends and in their triumph die, like fire and powder, which, as they kiss, consume.
What the fuck does that even mean? I'm not bothered about these old sods who wrote those romantic classics. I just think we should live life in the moment and to the full. Don't you?"

After hearing it being said and putting it in the opening we decided it was not what we wanted. Instead we took inspiration from the voice over in 'Trainspotting'. The short snappy phrases and philosophical meaning was more suitable for us. Our final voice over is this:

"Wake up. Get dressed. Go to college. Do work. Go home. Do homework. Graduate. Get a job. Have kids. Die. Fuck that, I'm gonna live my life how I want to."

Both voiceovers are available to listen to on the 'Sound' page.

Certificate Rating

According to BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) guidelines 'Roads' would be an age rating of 15. Our target audience ranges from 15 to 30 year olds so it would be appropriate to have this rating. However, having this limitation would mean that we as a production company gain fewer profits as no one younger than 15 may rent or buy a 15 rated video work or enter into a 15 film in a cinema. This does not concern us significantly though as we understood our film was for a niche market and by advertising our mature themes and most branding it as having low-key explicit content it may intrigued a wider audience.

It has been rated this as our film could potentially show representations of:

  • discriminatory language or behaviour
  • the misuse of easily accessible and highly dangerous substances
  • the consumption of drugs (although our film does not encourage nor promote the use of drugs, it may contain information about how to use drugs for recreational purposes)
  • imitable behaviour
  • strong language
  • some sexual activity
  • some violence and threat
All of these feature of a 15 rated film are also important to our product as the use of strong language, reckless behaviour, drugs, sex, violence will add to the comedy of the genre while still expressing how these have affected this teenage girl's life. Some of these features may not have been exposed in the opening sequence of the film that we have made, however, after considering the rest of the film, I have a strong idea they may include it.

Comic Ideas Brainstorm

After the feedback we were given when we screened the second edit of our film opening to the target audience, they still were not getting the sense of comedy being the genre. Therefore, my group and I revisited our research of what makes a comedy and we brainstormed some comic ideas that we might want to use.
